23 January 2008 (Graham's) "Pro-plus needed for Sky + chat & late nights"

Game 1 – 8 players - (1st Dave, 2nd Jude, 3rd Baz)

We were down to 8 players this week after a last minute cold kept JJ on the bench, or was it Arsenal's humiliating 5-1 defeat at White Hart Lane on Tuesday?
After an exciting comparison of trouser size (during which Dean began to take his off) the poker kicked off at quadruple speed when IJ's pocket Jacks, which were seemed tasty over pair, cost him very dearly as Lee had hit 9999.
IJ made a bit back at Sharon's expense, when she went all in with A10 & he called with AJ and hit a straight. Sharon exited (8th) shortly after Dan hit two pair on the turn.
In the first of the game's 5 pairs of pocket aces, Dan got paid by an AK, but then doubled Baz up who had AA a few hands later and beat Dan's A9.
IJ went out (7th) after hitting a middle pair with his 10 8, which wasn't enough to beat Dan's Q2.
In a mini battle of Essex, Dave knocked Lee & Dean out. He raised two piles of red, which Dean and Lee called - Lee all in.
Dave JQ
Lee J9
Dean A10.
The flop came Q95, all diamonds and so Dave raised and Dean, who was on a nut flush draw called.
The turn was 6, river was 10, which unfortunately for Dean, gave him 2nd pair and he went all in, only to be knocked out (5th) by Dave's top pair. Lee's pair of 9s also saw him exit (6th).
Dan was knocked out (4th) by Jude, who also dismissed Baz (3rd). Despite going into heads up chip leader, Dave was too strong for Jude & took the 6 points.
Well done Dave!

Game 2 – 6 players - (1st Lee, 2nd Dan, 3rd IJ)

Second game kicked off at 23.43, after the arrival of Paul, true to his word of last week, who declared early that he had a 1.15am curfew.
He spent most of the early part of the game making £2 raises, until he got fed up with their identification by everyone as a bluff, and so started raising by £4. Broadly speaking, he played like a man with a curfew - at one point in his 'non-bluffing' his hands began to shake. He insisted that he is going to try and play more often this year, saying he only managed 3 games last year (a quick check on the table reveals it to be 4 times but near enough).
Eventually, amidst active speculation as to when he would get reckless, he made a £5 pre-flop raise, at 12.56. IJ, who was holding A6, called. An ace came on the flop, which inspired Paul, who was holding KQ, to raise all in. IJ called and knocked Paul out (6th), although he insisted it had nothing to do with his curfew and that it was a good bluff.
Lee & Dan played a hand with flop K33, followed by another 33 on turn and river, so only an Ace could beat the board. Dan had raised a pile of each both before and after flop, but Lee had the balls of steel (or an Ace) & went all in on the river. Dan folded.
Dan recovered his nerves to double up when his A3 turned into a straight, beating Baz's top pair K3. Baz then exited (5th) after going all in with K10, which couldn't beat Dan's 33.
Dan raised all in with AQ, which Dave called with 88. Dan hit a Q and decimated Dave 'on the flip of a coin.' Dave quickly got his revenge, when his 66 came up against Dan's AQ. Dan's ended up with trip Qs, but couldn't overcome Dave's full house.
Lee lost his bottle when he hit a high straight, but only called Dan's meagre raise. Lee then landed the fatal blow on Dave, going all in with a straight, which quickly turned into a flush, beating Dave's top pair and leaving him needing a miracle.
Dave finally went out (4th) when he went all in with 10 2, and got called by Dan A2.
With 2am past, IJ, Lee & Dan slugged it out, with IJ & Lee having to work twice as hard shuffling, dealing & being Dan's chip bitch, while Dan fed Noah.
IJ had two attempts to kill off Dan, calling Dan's 8 10 all in, with pocket 9s, only to see Dan hit a 10. Then IJ went out (3rd) after going all in with pocket 10s, which got unlucky against Dan's A5, which hit an Ace.
At 2.15 (I think?) Lee won & Dan came second, but to be honest I was so tired, it could have been Dan won & Lee came second. I'm sure that if I'm wrong, one of them will correct me. All I know is that Thursday was a total write off for me & I didn't even get a place.
So well done to both Lee & Dan - whichever of you won, sleep was definitely the loser.

2008 Poker Rankings table:

Dave's win propels him into the number 2 spot, splitting the Young's in their matrimonial domination of the table.

Meanwhile, Jude finally gets on the scoreboard, and JJ's no show ensures that he remains bottom of the regular players.

Conversation topics:

With Dean on time and awake, conversation flowed freely throughout the early evening. From one fascinating topic ('what size ski jacket should Lee get?') to the next ('Should Dean dump his personal trainer?') it really was a night to remember, and one that JJ will surely regret having missed.
For me, the highlight was probably 'Where should Dean & Jude put their two Sky + boxes?', surely one of the great philosophical and moral debates of our time. When you truly think about it (and we certainly did) there are so many elements of this problem to consider:
should they go in the bedroom and the basement?
what about the playroom? do the kids need sky+ in there?
what about the lounge?
is it maltreatment to only give the au pair freeview, or should she have Sky+ too?
Which tvs should be linked with which?
Regretfuly, the conversation had to end: when Dean complained about how many rude comments we were making, Barry summed up our pain by saying:
"We're rude. You're boring. That's it."

Once the ladies exited, the second game's conversation reached all new low with speculation about whether Moist Barry's would shoot to victory (see below).

Congratulations of the week:

to Dave for completing on his new house -we wish you much health, happiness and poker success there.

Special Feature: Favourite Words

Paul - egregious

Sub Prime Crisis

Following the problems in the sub-prime lending market in America and the run on Northern Rock in the UK, uncertainty has now hit Japan. In the last 7 days Origami Bank has folded, Sumo Bank has gone belly up and Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches. Yesterday, it was announced that Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song while today shares in Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived. Furthermore, 500 staff at Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.
Thanks to Barry for all of those

16 January 2008 (Graham's) "3 Kings deliver gifts for Lee"

Game 1 – 9 players - (1st Lee, 2nd Dean, 3rd Baz)

The start of the first game was delayed by a nasty accident, that closed the North Circular, creating traffic jams spiralling away from Henley's Corner throughout the whole of the surrounding area. James was a casualty of the gridlock, having bravely attempted to reach Abbotts Gardens for an hour and a half and then giving up and crawling home. Nice effort James, hope you made it back eventually but you still owe a tenner, although we'll let you off the £1 Royal Flush stake...
As if the traffic wasn't traumatic enough, Gaby locked the dining room door, creating a fire hazard for those players that managed to safely arrive... She claimed it made a noise, which travelled up through to the loft and woke her up....
But onto the poker, IJ was decimated very early when his pair of Aces on the flop turned into two pair, which were casually swiped aside by Dan's flush. Jude kindly finished IJ off (9th), with pocket Qs against his pocket 4s.
Sharon got abusive after mucking up a deal, due to not seeing the chips that IJ didn't have & dealing him in. She then made a noisy issue about his choice of hands to include in the blog. Disgraceful behaviour ...
Dean doubled up with AQ against Lee's KK, when he hit an Ace. Lee wasn't disturbed for long, as his next KK hit a K & knocked Sharon out (8th).
Dean then doubled up again against JJ, with A8 plays KQ, although Baz would have won if he'd had the balls to call with his 77.
Baz didn't chicken out twice, and in a monster swing hand, he knocked both JJ, AQ, and Dan, Q8, out with big slick. Dan came 7th and JJ 6th.
Dave was out next (5th) when his K10 failed to get lucky against Dean's pockets jacks. Then Mrs Jayson departed with her JK falling victim to Lee's 3rd pocket Kings of the night.
Lee consolidated his position with an Oscar winning performance against Barry. Holding pocket deuces, he hit trips on the flop and convinced Baz that his AK was enough to go all in. Lee gratefully called, hitting a full house in the end and decimating the Bazmeister.
Lee completed the job professionally, pushing Baz out 3rd & squaring up to Dean. Heads up was fairly painless: both hit trip 4s, but unfortunately for Dean his were with a pathetic 2, while Lee's were accompanied by a mighty Jack.
All was over by 11.15, with Lee's win continuing the trend of a Young victory for every week of 2008. Well all 3 of them in any case.

Game 2 – 7 players - (1st Baz, 2nd IJ, 3rd Dave)

After a brief interlude, brightened up by Paul's text "Not playing tonight, but next week def" (we look forward to seeing you Paul) second game kicked off.
Dan was knocked out first, when his AJ ran into Baz's AK, which hit AK. Dan (7th) settled down to the long night ahead, waiting for us all to leave his floodlit palace.
JJ's KK virtually finished off Dean's 66, leaving Dean with a measly 75p. Dean then boldly thrust his chips into the pot, and was cruelly dispatched by Dave's full house. Dean (6th)
Lee's pocket rockets encouraged him to quickly call Dave's all in bluff, and he was rewarded by doubling up. Despite coming back swiftly and knocking JJ out (5th) when his A7 became trip Aces, Dave refused to crack a smile in celebration.
Dave's luck continued when he went all in with 88 to be gratefully called by Baz holding QQ. In an unbelievably lucky twist of events, Dave hit a straight on the river, took his coat off, and tried to hide a smirk.
He went on to knock Lee out (4th) with trip Aces again, but Barry got his revenge, winning a massive pot with pocket 2s, which turned into a full house and overcame Dave's pocket 10s.
Dave then swiftly exited (both the game and the building) when Barry's pocket 8s held up against his pocket 5s. Dave out 3rd.
It was all over by 2am, when the unstoppable Baz's AJ played IJ's QQ, only to hit an Ace.
Well done Baz !

2008 Poker Rankings table:

Lee's 2nd win of the year has knocked Sharon off the top spot, giving the Youngs first and second in the table, a first for our poker game.
The other dynamic poker couple are performing less well, with 2 points between Mr & Mrs Jayson.
Meanwhile, last year's champ is languishing near the bottom of the table, and Dave & Vic share fourth place (not something I imagine I'll have to write very often this year...)

Conversation:

The smokers outside discovered an abandoned pair of shoes, strongly smelling of petrol.
This inspired Sharon to share the story of how she spilt a smoothie in her and Lee's car, didn't bother to clean it up, then went on holiday. Lee was most appreciative of the smell....
But it turns out this wasn't a first smoothie related offence, as she had previously spilt a smoothie all over her laptop, called IT when it wouldn't work and denied that she had spilt anything in it... that is until they unscrewed the keyboard and poured smoothie out onto the desk....
Some discussion about how big Dave's new tv needs to be and what Barry looked like when he had hair (anyone with a photo please submit for next week's blog)
Dan admitted that not only could he not remember what was the first song that he & Gaby danced together at their wedding, but he couldn't remember if they had danced together at all. If anyone can remember please let Dan know.
And talking about first songs....

That's all for this week - thanks for all the feedback about the new blog, keep it coming & see you Wednesday...

9 January 2008 (The Tropic of Graham) 'Vic's 2 year wait for a win finally over'

Game 1 – 10 players - (1st Sharon, 2nd Dan, 3rd Baz)

Third game of the year got off to a brisk start with JJ paying no respect to Barry and calling his large raise. Unfortunately for JJ, Baz hits his first trip 3s of the night.
Barry saw more early action, delighting Sharon when he called her raise with pocket Aces. He regretted his call as she hit the nut flush and cleaned up.
Last year's champion couldn't find his old form and become the evening's first casualty, after going all in holding a monster 4 5. Lee eagerly called holding pocket 8s & hit a full house, to banish JJ to the sofa and the North London Derby.
Barry hit his 2nd trip 3s of the night and got paid by Jude who hit 2 pair.
Barry then hits trips again but gets deservedly mullered by Sharon's straight flush - well worthy of my first blog photograph.

Barry clawed his way back, when Vic & Charlie hit Kings against his pocket Aces, sending Vic out 9th.
Dan demonstrated his 20/20 vision by not seeing IJ's chips and insisting that the dealing has been mucked up (this is a most unusual occurrence in our game.)
IJ's 75p all in raise was met with laughs of derision from Dave - which turns into total humiliation when IJ hits trip Kings, but Dave hits nut flush on the river, sending IJ out 8th.
Charlie, slowly decimated in a succession of hands, hangs on until eventually his pocket 6s succumb to Baz's AQ, which hits a Q. Charles 7th out.
Lee acquires a monster pile of chips after knocking both Dave (6th) & Jude out (5th) with trip 7s.
Dave (now out) then laughs again, this time at Baz's misfortune after he thinks he has Dan sewn up with full house 9s over Aces - until he realises that Dan has Aces over 9s. Damn that last 9....
Dan maximised his home team advantage, and while the others withered in the tropical heat of his house, he knocked out Lee (4th) with a straight despite having earlier been down to his last chips.
But Sharon, quietly acclimatising to the glare of the 46 spotlights in Dan & Gaby's lounge, knocked Barry out (3rd) and then beat Dan heads up, who's pocket Kings were not enough to beat her straight.
Congrats Sharon, first win of 2008, secured in the third game of the year...

Game 2 – 9 players - (1st Vic (that is not a typo), 2nd IJ, 3rd Dave)

Second game got off to a flying start when JJ raised £2.50 before the flop, holding QQ.
Vic folded declaring "You won't believe what I'm folding."
The first 2 cards of the flop were QQ, followed by a K, and JJ controls his excitement as he has hit 4Qs, on the first flop.
Dan with A8 spades, was drawn in by the 2 spades on the flop and called JJ's raise. Luckily for Dan, a further spade never arrived and he folds when JJ goes all in.
Vic had folded pocket Js and was correct - no one could believe he laid it down, however prescient.
JJ thought his luck was back when he got pocket rockets and re-raised Dan's £3 raise. He didn't have long to enjoy his AA or bask in his 4Q glory, as Dan had hit trip 7s, leaving JJ with 3 chips.
He exits shortly after, first out in both games - a miserable night for the ex-champion.
IJ knocked Dan out (8th) & then Barry (7th).
Dean and Dave go all in, both with pocket Js & inevitably split the pot. However, it was agreed by all that had one of them won it by an amazing fluke, Dave would definitely take it the best...
Vic knocked Lee out (6th) and then IJ knocked Charlie out (5th).
IJ's 99 then held up against Dave's A9, who was left decimated and with little chance of winning - although more chance than there is of the Bank of England raising interest rates tomorrow, Dean helpfully pointed out. (correctly as it turned out)
Dean exited next (4th) followed by Dave (3rd) leaving IJ and Vic to play heads up with a lot more at stake than usual.
Despite going in ahead, IJ soon fell behind and then for what seemed like an eternity, (especially for dealer Dan) the chips moved backwards & forwards, with neither player successfully landing the killer blow.
Eventually, at 2.45am, Vic prevailed, to his & Dan's relief (who was getting up in 3 hours).
Well done Vic for a hard fought victory, breaking your 2 year run without a win.
Maybe 2008 is going to be your poker year ....

2008 Poker Rankings table:

Congrats Sharon on topping the table & becoming our first female to reach the No 1 spot.
Surely, Vic has also reached his highest ever position in 3 years of playing.
Early days, of course, so we won't read too much into the table for now...

Congratulations for this week:

Have to go to Vic, but let me now if anyone else is due any.

Contributions of the Week:

Thanks to last year's blogger for this gem - anyone who can demonstrate that they can beat it at poker next week gets a prize...

Can you draw a six while your foot's rotating? it's still fascinatinglyweird. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floorand make clockwise circles. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6"in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction andthere's nothing you can do about it.

Weird News Stories of the Week:
